Consider the fence before choosing a finish

Staining is part of planning the appearance and care of a wood fence. West Coast Fencing & Cedar offers professional staining services alongside our fencing work. With more than 10 years of fencing experience and a focus on cedar, we can discuss the finish in the context of the fence's material and condition.

For an existing fence, the starting point is the surface: its age, weathering and any previous coating. For a new fence, discuss staining while planning the installation so the timing and finish can be considered together. The same colour can appear different on new and weathered wood, so share the look you want rather than relying only on a colour name.

What affects the staining scope?

A staining quote depends on more than fence length. Board arrangement, height and the sides to be treated affect the area involved. Access matters too, especially where plants, patios or neighbouring property are close to the fence.

  • The fence's age, condition and any known previous finish.
  • Approximate length, height and board pattern.
  • Whether one or both sides, gates and posts are included.
  • Access along each side and nearby surfaces or landscaping.
  • Photos or references showing your preferred appearance.

Staining does not resolve broken boards or failing posts. Include any structural concerns when requesting a quote so the fence condition can be reviewed first. Our fence repair service covers existing fencing, while cedar fence installation is an option when replacement is needed.

If a custom gate is part of the project, include it in the finish discussion. Agreeing on the components and surfaces to be stained helps keep the proposed work clear.
